The Pastor's Pastor

David W. Humphrey MA CPA CMA

As both a Pastor and CFO of major government organizations, I understand that being a leader can sometimes be a lonely endeavor. God's intent isn't that the ministry destroys you, but builds your inner, spiritual man. That way, you can go on to do greater and greater works for Him. Yet, what we are seeing today is droves of pastors leaving the ministry defeated, depressed, and dejected.  It doesn't have to be that way. This is where I come in. Over the last ten years I have been helping organizations and churches alike, throughout Western Canada, grow and thrive.

I firmly believe in three principles of a successful ministry or organization.

  1. Faith

  2. Visionary Leadership

  3. Finance

The order of these is very important. Without success in the first principle, the other two will never reach their full potential.

Faith is the foundation for success in all our endeavours, including what we do for a living. Whether your organization is a Church, a portfolio of Tim Horton's coffee shops, or a small hunting shop, God should be at the centre.

If the Lord doesn’t build the house, the builders are working for nothing.
If the Lord doesn’t guard the city, the guards are watching for nothing. Psalm 127:1

I understand the importance of Visionary Leadership. A true leader is built through relationship, not born. It takes years of training and self-understanding to become a great leader. Jesus never built an organization, nor did Paul. They built relationships with other fellow workers whom they could pour their lives into. I believe that it is by this method that we can move you and your organization from good leaders to great leaders, and from great leaders to visionary ones.

Finally, that brings us to the third pillar of a successful business, finance. You may find it strange that this is the third pillar, and not the first. While it is extremely important to understand the entire financial picture of any business you are leading, without Faith and Visionary Leadership, you may be blind to certain pitfalls that have developed or may develop in your business. With my experience as a CFO and CPA, I offer a unique perspective to any organization. I can help identify and correct any blind spots that may have developed in your business, and help you plan for future success.
